Call for Abstracts
The AVEENO Active Naturals Institute, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, will provide two research grants ($30,000 each) to physicians undertaking research in the field of natural ingredients in dermatology. Specific areas of interest include: new and existing natural ingredients to address pigmentation, the role of natural ingredients in antiaging formulations, and the value of natural ingredients in formulations focusing on skin barrier protection and repair. Applicants must be MDs or DOs who are board-certified or board-eligible in dermatology and demonstrate a strong commitment to natural ingredient research. For preclinical in vitro and in vivo research relevant to antiaging and barrier repair, no animal testing is accepted. Applications must be submitted by October 31, 2010. The LaRoche-Posay North American Foundation has announced a call for abstracts for its 2011 research awards. The 2011 grants will include two $10,000 awards for research by dermatology residents, fellows and new dermatologists in practice for up to two years. Proposals should include a one-page abstract, research plan and budget totaling no more than 10 pages; a curriculum vitae of the applicant; and a letter of support from a mentor or chief of dermatology. Research abstracts will be evaluated by members of the LaRoche-Posay North American Scientific Committee. Winners will be announced at the 2011 American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Meeting in New Orleans. Japan Approves Vascular Laser
Candela Corporation, a subsidiary of Syneron Medical, has received registration approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to market its VBeam long-pulsed dye laser system in Japan for use in the treatment of vascular conditions. The approval will help facilitate health insurance payments for physicians and patients, allowing for certain medical conditions to be reimbursed.
Fibrocell Names Physician Advisors
Fibrocell Sciences, a biotechnology company focused on the development of autologous cell therapies for aesthetic, medical and scientific applications, has announced the appointment of three new advisors: Nicolas Elian, DDS; plastic surgeon William K. Boss, MD; and Daniel D. Lozano, MD, MBA, FACS, a surgeon and burn repair specialist. The company’s autologous cell therapy azficel-T is currently under review by the United States Food & Drug Administration for the treatment of nasolabial folds. “Drs. Elian, Boss and Lozano will provide invaluable perspective as we progress with investigating this technology for uses in periodontics and skin repair for burn victims,” said David Pernock, Fibrocell chairman and CEO.
Clarisonic Welcomes New VP
Clarisonic has announced the appointment of Chris Payne as vice president of marketing. Payne will lead all marketing functions and positioning of the brand for future growth. Prior to joining Clarisonic, he served as assistant vice president of skincare marketing at Lancôme and spent 11 years in sales and marketing for Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani.
Lumenis Expands Service Contracts
Lumenis, a manufacturer of aesthetic laser and light systems, has launched a new service and warranty program for United States-based users of the company’s Lumenis One IPL and laser platform. The OPT-IN program is available to all new and current owners of the equipment at no additional charge to their existing warranty and service contracts. The OPT-IN service package includes service and support for all treatment heads, complementary software upgrades, two preventive maintenance service visits and discounted consumables during the life of the service contract or warranty period. According to Aesthetic Business Unit senior vice president and general manager Robert Mann, the OPT-IN package was conceived based on physician-customer feedback.
Biovail Acquires Valeant
Biovail, Canada’s largest, publicly traded pharmaceutical company, will acquire Valeant, a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on neurology and dermatology. Both companies’ boards of directors have unanimously approved a definitive merger agreement, which will combine the two entities under a new company called Valeant Pharmaceutical International. Valeant stockholders will receive a one-time special cash dividend of $16.77 per share immediately and 1.7089 shares of Biovail common stock upon closing of the merger in exchange for each share of Valeant stock currently owned. J. Michael Pearson, chairman and CEO of Valeant, will serve as the new Valeant’s CEO. Bill Wells, CEO of Biovail, will act as the nonexecutive chairman.
Anti-Cellulite Licensing Deal Signed
Transdel Pharmaceuticals and Jan Marini Skin Research (JMSR) have entered into a licensing agreement granting JMSR exclusive U.S. rights to Transdel’s transdermal delivery technology for use in an anti-cellulite product for the dermatological market. Under the terms of the agreement, JMSR will pay a licensing royalty on all sales of the anti-cellulite product utilizing the transdermal delivery technology for approximately one year, after which time the company has a non-exclusive right to the technology.
Pierre Fabre Names
New CEO
Olivier Bohuon has been named CEO of Pierre Fabre Group, a French pharmaceutical company and leader in the field of dermo-cosmetic products. Bohuon—who replaces former CEO Jean-Pierre Garnier—brings 20 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry to his new position. Prior to joining Pierre Fabre, he was the executive vice president of Abbott Corporation and president of the company’s pharmaceutical division; marketing and then operations director of Glaxo France; CEO of SmithKline Beecham Laboratories; and director of GlaxoSmithKline’s commercial operations, Europe.
UltraShape on Fast Track Approval
The United States Food & Drug Administration has advised UltraShape, makers of the noninvasive ultrasound-based Contour I body contouring system, that it may submit a request for clearance of the Contour I under the 510(k) predicate device approval regulation rather than as a pre-market approval (PMA) as was previously advised. Proceeding under the 510(k) pathway is expected to simplify and shorten the submisson process for FDA clearance to sell the system in the U.S. “The U.S. is the largest and most important market in the world and represents a huge opportunity for our products,” said UltraShape CEO Assaf Eyal. “Submission for FDA market clearance under the 510(k) regulation is a major milestone for UltraShape.”
Elemé Awarded for Leadership
Nancy M. Briefs, president and CEO of Elemé Medical, makers of the SmoothShapes system, received the Leadership Award from Women Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (WEST). The nonprofit group inspires female scientists and engineers to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and apply it to technological innovation as well as career advancement.
Sciton Goes Multilingual
Sciton, a manufacturer of high-quality laser and light systems for the medical aesthetics industry, has launched a Japanese language website (sciton.jp) for Japanese physicians and consumers. “Since the establishment of Sciton Japan in April 2010, inquiries about the Sciton laser systems have been coming in every day. Now, with the translated website, we can serve our customers in a convenient and real-time fashion to provide the materials and references that they need.”
Laban Joins Aesthetic Advancements
Aesthetics Advancements, an Atlanta-based medical aesthetic training program, has appointed Jake Laban, MBA, executive director of the company. A graduate of UCLA and Pepperdine University, Laban previously worked with Johnson & Johnson and Allergan.
PyratineXR Effective and Well-Tolerated
A new study published in the June 2010 issue of Journal of Drugs in Dermatology demonstrates that PyratineXR—a moisturizing lotion containing furfuryl tetrahydropyranyladenine as PRK-124—is effective for rosacea patients and well-tolerated. For the 48-week clinical study, 18 patients with mild-to-moderate rosacea applied PyratineXR twice daily. Subjects experienced a mean 44% reduction in erythema severity and a mean 89% reduction in inflammatory lesion count at week 48. No treatment-induced irritation was observed.
